The Capitol

  • Heritage listed
  • Entertainment

An extraordinary refurbished cinema and destination for events, festivals and live performances promoting culture, education and innovation.

The venue features beautifully lit ceilings designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin in ornate Chicago-gothic style. The dramatic lighting was used in conjunction with orchestral scores during the early silent film era of the 1920s.

The site was purchased by RMIT University in 1999 and is used by students and non-students for public screenings and events.
