Summer may be over (according to the calendar), but this time of year is still perfect for heading outdoors. Take a stroll among autumn leaves, golden sunshine and cooler air.

Carlton Gardens

As the seasons change the Royal Exhibition Building looks as stunning as ever. Visit at sunset while the gardens are shrouded in autumn leaves to catch a perfect rose gold scene. The striking Hochgurtel Fountain is an ideal spot to stop and reflect, rain, hail or shine. From there it’s an easy stroll to Lygon Street’s heart-warming Italian charm.

Fitzroy Gardens

This quiet oasis on the edge of the CBD beckons residents and workers alike outside for a ramble. Autumn is the best time to gaze at avenues of elm trees, the stream in fern gully and sparkling ornamental ponds. Stop for a caffeine hit at ethical coffee spot KereKere Green to stay fuelled for your travels.

Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria

One of Australia’s most beautiful outdoor spaces, the Royal Botanic Gardens is made for wanderers, explorers and nature lovers. It’s full of deciduous trees bright with autumn colour, and inviting mountains of fallen leaves. Stroll around the ornamental lake for different views of autumn foliage. The arid garden and glittering Guilfoyle's Volcano are a must visit, too.

Kings Domain

You may have walked through Kings Domain on your way to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl or the Shrine of Remembrance. But have you ambled along the avenue of poplar trees, which turn gold in autumn? Or admired the water nymph statues? You can also discover a sacred Indigenous site marked by the Aboriginal Burial Stone, and a monument to war hero Weary Dunlop.

Queen Victoria Gardens

Part of the Domain Parklands, Queen Victoria Gardens are a gorgeous green space opposite NGV International. You might know its most famous feature, the floral clock, but there’s so much more to see. Statues include everything from grand monuments to leaping bronze frogs. Or take a seat in the charming rotunda, watch ducks on the ornamental pool, and enjoy the serenity.

Treasury Gardens

Treasury Gardens is a contrast in foliage, as falling oak leaves drift past evergreen conifers. It’s a relaxing place for people watching. That includes people popping in and out of Parliament House close by. More curious creatures appear at night, when the resident possums are about.
