Freedom for the Press

  • Talk
  • Learning

Freedom of the press is the bedrock of democracy – but in Australia, it’s under threat.

Journalists are meant to hold the powerful to account, expose the truth, and ensure the public has access to the information that matters. Yet today, that freedom is being chipped away.

Secrecy laws. National security legislation. Defamation rules. One by one, these barriers make it harder to report the truth. Raids on newsrooms and prosecutions of whistleblowers send a chilling message: stories in the public interest can be silenced.

Hosted by Tom Ballard, this panel discussion will feature:

- Andrew Wilkie MP – Independent Federal MP and long-time defender of whistleblowers and press freedom
- Greg Barns SC – Barrister and human rights advocate.
- More speakers to be announced

This event is a fight for press freedom and every citizen’s right to know.
